Each was a waste of square footage. The walls were no more than chunks of plaster held together by the underlying lath. She was still pondering the possibilities when she found herself standing outside rooms 4 and 5 of her hotel. With more than two decades tending bar, she knew what made money - serving drinks to a thirsty public. ![]() The implementation was more complicated than she ever imagined. It's rooted in a moment that changed lives, when Danielle Martinez asked herself a simple question while facing a daunting plight. Yet this tiny bar, certainly the smallest in Arizona and quite possibly the second smallest in the U.S., goes back just seven years. ![]() With neither windows nor TVs, surely this place was built a century ago when the only social media was a thoughtful conversation with friends or strangers. There is a whiff of history to the place, from the dark, heavily lacquered bar to the beaded wall panels stretching 8 feet up the 12-foot walls. Mirrors on three of the four walls will swear the room is larger than it is, but nobody's buying it. It's hard to imagine the room's previous life when you're settled onto one of the four stools and ordering a cold beer or slurping a bourbon-laced Jello shot. It is indeed housed within its namesake, once a miserable and un-rentable room that became a dumping ground over the years. The Room 4 Bar could just as easily be named for its recommended occupancy as for its location. Bottles of all shapes and colors line narrow shelves, the strand of glittering lights laced among them. They head to the right as indicated by the arrow on the handmade "Bar" sign.Ĭhristmas lights peek from a doorway just around the corner. More than two dozen steps later, first-time visitors have little idea they are in the lobby of the Silver King Hotel. Each customer might have argued with Room 4's website, which called the bar "the best kept secret in Bisbee." Stools rotated quickly through the evening as patrons enjoyed a drink before allowing the next person the experience of bellying up to the tiny bar. Martinez glanced up and decided for them. Do they shoulder their way in and risk upsetting the balance, or signal to the bartender in a way that could violate decorum? A hesitant-looking couple stood in the doorway, weighing their next move carefully. Four more customers stood in the remaining space, facing the bar two by two. The 100-square-foot space wedged into the second floor of the historic Silver King Hotel reaches "packed" at a total other bars wouldn't consider a handful.Īs is typical of a weekend night, each of the four stools at the L-shaped bar were occupied. Then again, "full house" is relative at the Room 4 Bar, Arizona's smallest drinking establishment. Owner and bartender Danielle Martinez kept her head down, pouring this and shaking that, keeping up with the orders and grateful for another full house.
